What greater work is there than training the mind and forming the habits of the young?
– St. John Chrysostom

- Middle School Science
Science education in the middle grades focuses on developing inquiry skills, creating curiosity about the natural world, and establishing a basis of scientific literacy. Students study the major strands of Physical Science, Life Science and Earth Science as they progress through the grades. Each year students choose a topic and participate in Science Fair competitions. We take advantage of our natural environment and community assets to expand learning beyond the classroom with field trips and excursions. Some of these include experiencing the thrill of forces with boxcars, studying the geology of Oahu and comparing invasive and native species in the forest. Partnering with community groups for service projects allows our students to contribute their energy to protecting our local environment. Our goal is to prepare students for their future studies in high school while encouraging a sense of wonder and appreciation of God’s creation.
- Middle School Social Studies
The Social Studies curriculum will introduce the students to a variety of disciplines, including History, Geography, Economics, and Government. Students will be provided the opportunity to practice the skills of finding evidence in texts, presenting arguments with evidential support, and recognizing bias and different points of view. The students will explore and become familiar with the history and culture of various peoples as a step toward becoming a responsible citizen in their neighborhoods, their country, and their world.
- Middle School Religion
The Religion program is designed to provide students with an understanding of the Catholic faith, a familiarity with both the Old and New Testament, and an appreciation for the history of the Church. The program will incorporate service projects in order to encourage our students to follow the example of Jesus in loving and serving others. Through the teaching of Religion, we also encourage our students to develop empathy, compassion, and a heart for service as they live the lives to which God calls them.
- Middle School Language Arts
Middle School Language Arts encourages students to develop a love of reading and writing, and the skills of effective communication. Students master the rules of proper grammar and sentence structure through daily guided practice, and through informative, argumentative, and narrative written assignments. Students read fiction and non-fiction works and are given the opportunity to respond in a variety of both objective and creative manners that include written, drama, and media projects. Direct vocabulary instruction includes the study of Greek and Latin roots, words in context, synonyms, antonyms, and analogies.
